Japan's Alcohol Exports Hit Record ¥149.5 Billion in 2025

Japan's alcoholic beverage exports reached an all-time high of ¥149.5 billion (approximately $1 billion) in 2025, up 11.8% from the previous year, according to data compiled by the National Tax Agency from Ministry of Finance trade statistics.

Exports had peaked at ¥139.2 billion in 2022 before plateauing. The 2025 figures mark a decisive return to growth, with year-on-year increases recorded every month for 17 consecutive months since August 2024.

Whisky, Not Sake, Leads the Way

When people think of Japanese alcohol abroad, sake usually comes to mind. But by export value, Japanese whisky led all categories in 2025 at ¥49 billion (+12.2%). Sake came in a close second at ¥45.9 billion (+5.6%).

Still, sake's trajectory over the past decade is remarkable — it has roughly tripled from ¥15.6 billion in 2016. Steady rather than spectacular, but consistent.

The biggest mover was beer, up 24.8% to ¥26.3 billion, likely driven by growing international demand for Japanese craft beer. Gin and vodka also surged 21.4%. Japan's alcohol exports are no longer a sake-only story.

Where Is It Going?

China was the top destination at ¥29.2 billion (+19.4%), bouncing back sharply after a 23.9% decline in 2024. The U.S. followed closely at ¥27.7 billion (+4.7%).

Singapore approached the ¥10 billion mark (+28.9%), up from ¥7.8 billion just a year earlier — a clear sign of growing demand across Southeast Asia.

Hong Kong, once Asia's main hub for Japanese sake distribution, slipped to ¥9.3 billion (-9.9%). More direct exports to mainland China may be shifting volume away from the Hong Kong route.

Smaller markets are growing fast too. Australia jumped 34.9% and France 31.4%. The map of where Japanese alcohol is consumed keeps expanding.

Country/Region 2025 YoY Change
China ¥29.2B +19.4%
United States ¥27.7B +4.7%
South Korea ¥19.4B +14.4%

Looking Ahead: Tariffs and the UNESCO Effect

Two factors will shape 2026. First, tariffs: China and the U.S. together account for nearly 40% of total exports, so any shift in trade policy will have an outsized impact.

Second, the UNESCO inscription of "traditional sake-making" as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2024. When "washoku" (Japanese cuisine) received the same recognition in 2013, Japanese restaurants proliferated worldwide. Whether a similar boost awaits sake remains to be seen in the 2026 data.
