After closing time, Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium will be taken over for "Sake Night Aquarium," an evening event where guests taste sake from nine breweries across Miyagi Prefecture. It runs on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 18:30 to 21:30, and is open only to those aged 20 and over. The aquarium's operator, Yokohama Hakkeijima Inc., announced the event.
The event began in 2017 as a recovery-support project following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and this marks its 14th edition. Tickets sold out last time, and it has clearly become a fixture on the local calendar.
The aquarium becomes an after-hours tasting hall
By day, the aquarium is full of families. After closing, the mood changes completely. With the lights dimmed, the creatures look different from how they appear in daytime, and guests stroll past the tanks with a glass of Miyagi sake in hand. True to the name, you drink with fish swimming right in front of you.
The event runs from 18:30 to 21:30 on Saturday, August 29, at Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium, for guests aged 20 and over. Ticket prices, capacity, and how to apply had not been announced at the time of the release, so anyone interested will want to watch for further details.
Nine Miyagi breweries, including a first-timer
Nine breweries from across Miyagi take part. From Shiogama come Saura and Shiogama Abekan Shuzo; from Ishinomaki, Hirakou Shuzo; from Kesennuma, Otokoyama Honten and Kakuboshi; and from Yuriage, Sasaki Shuzoten. Zao Shuzo joins as a special guest brewery.
From Osaki City come Ichinokura and Miyakanbai, with Miyakanbai appearing for the first time. The lineup of coastal breweries from Shiogama, Ishinomaki, Kesennuma, and Yuriage reflects the event's roots as a post-disaster recovery project. Each brewery brings not only its signature labels but also limited and rarely seen bottles, so which sake you'll get to try is part of the fun on the night.
The brewers pour the sake themselves
A defining feature of this event is that the brewers stand at the booths themselves. As the release puts it, "the brewers personally pour the sake and share what makes each one special." Chances to hear about a sake's character directly from the person who made it are rare.
Having someone pour your glass and being able to ask how the sake was made is a closeness you don't often get at an ordinary izakaya. Talking with the makers from all nine breweries adds something beyond the tasting itself.
Aquarium food on the side
To pair with the sake, the "wakuwaku ocean" food court on the first floor will sell event-only menu items made with products from J-Oil Mills. Having food available alongside the local sake gives guests more ways to spend the evening at the aquarium.
