KIGEN Japanese Sake Fest 2026: 57 Breweries Gather in Nara, the Birthplace of Sake

Nara, widely regarded as the birthplace of Japanese sake, will host its first nationwide sake festival from May 29 to 31, 2026. Held at the Nara Prefectural Convention Center, KIGEN Japanese Sake Fest 2026 brings together 57 breweries — 22 from Nara and 35 from across Japan — and expects around 3,000 visitors over three days.

The event is organized by the KIGEN Japanese Sake Fest Executive Committee (with N.I. Planning Co., Ltd. as secretariat), and supported by Nara Prefecture and Nara City. Its theme, "From the Origin, to the World," reflects an attempt to use Nara's historical weight as a launchpad for sending sake culture outward.

Why Nara?

Sake, in the form recognizable today, is generally traced back to Shoryaku-ji, a Buddhist temple in the hills outside Nara, where in the Muromachi period (14th–16th century) monks refined a clear, polished-rice brewing technique known as morohaku. Despite this origin story, no large-scale national sake festival has ever been held in Nara — until now.

The lineup includes a seminar featuring the head priest of Shoryaku-ji alongside brewers, an unusual pairing that reinforces the festival's framing.

Beyond sake: craft sake, wine, and craft beer

In addition to the 57 sake breweries, the festival features booths from craft sake makers (a growing category that uses non-traditional ingredients and techniques), Nara-grown wines, and local craft beer brewers. The intent is to show the full spectrum of Japanese fermented drink culture, from tradition to experimentation, in one place.

The venue is split between an indoor hall (brewery booths, sake booths, the pairing lunch show, and talk shows) and an outdoor plaza called Tenpyo Hiroba (food and merchandise stalls).

Experience-driven programming

The signature experiences move beyond simple tasting:

  • Pairing Lunch Show: A collaboration between Nara's Michelin-starred chefs and brewers, featuring a course built around local ingredients paired with regional sake. Reservations required, limited seating.
  • Audience Talk Shows: Brewers and rice farmers share the stories behind each bottle, paired with limited-edition sake available only at the event.

The organizers say they're targeting visitors in their 20s to 40s, including overseas travelers — people who tend to value quality and experience over quantity.

How tickets work

The basic plan includes an original ochoko (sake cup), 500ml of local water, and a digital ticket. Visitors enter by scanning a QR code, then use 2–4 ticket units per pour depending on the brand. Additional tickets can be purchased on site, and any sake you fall for can be ordered through your phone for home delivery within 1–1.5 months after the event.

The outdoor Tenpyo Hiroba area accepts cash-on-the-spot purchases without a QR ticket, lowering the barrier for casual drop-ins.
