19 Breweries, DJ Sets, and Sake Cocktails: "SAKE MODE" Targets the Under-40 Crowd in Shibuya

On April 18 (Saturday), a sake event called "SAKE MODE: AFTER HOURS" will take over SLOTH JINNAN, a culture space in Shibuya's Jinnan district. The catch: it's exclusively for people aged 20 to 39. Organized by Sake no Miraise, the event features free-flow sake from 19 breweries (30 labels), DJ and jazz performances, sake cocktails, and a brewer talk session — all for ¥3,500 to ¥5,500.

Senkin Meets Kaze no Mori, on Stage in Shibuya

The headline act is a talk session featuring two of sake's most talked-about brewers. Kazuki Usui, the 11th-generation head of Senkin — known for its "Edo-gaeri" philosophy and full-line kimoto production — will share the stage with Chobei Yamamoto, 13th-generation head of Kaze no Mori, the Nara brewery that pioneered a new standard in lightly sparkling sake. Sake influencer Rinku joins as a guest.

The session runs in two parts: a one-on-one between Senkin and Kaze no Mori, followed by a broader panel that includes Rinku and student sake group Gakujoukai.

The 19-Brewery Lineup

The participating breweries span the country (in Japanese alphabetical order): Igarashi Shuzo, Ishii Shuzo, Ide Jozo-ten, Inoue Shuzo, Kamaya, Saura, Senkin, Nagai Shuzo, Nanbu Bijin, Rokkasen, Kikumasamune Shuzo, Kenbishi Shuzo, Takarayama Jozo, Chiyomusubi Shuzo, Tsuchida Shuzo, Hachinohe Shuzo, Higashi Shuzo, Minakuchi Shuzo, and Yucho Shuzo.

From heritage names like Saura (Urakasumi), Nanbu Bijin, and Kenbishi, to newer-wave producers like Tsuchida and Takarayama — the range is impressive. Thirty labels on free-flow is generous by any standard.

Music, Cocktails, and AI Matching

The venue spans two floors. The 2nd floor is the main space with DJs, the talk session, sake, cocktails, and food. The 6th floor hosts jazz performances and a sake experience corner.

Sake cocktails are handled by Saketen, who'll mix original creations using the event's lineup as a base. For newcomers, an AI sake profiler called KAORIUM suggests matches based on your preferences.

Every attendee gets a 300ml bottle of sake and an ochoko (sake cup) to take home. Everything except food is included in the ticket price.
